el potrero

February 10th, 2009 cocokirby

I went to El Potrero for the first time this past saturday and, first of all, it was a great party. The music was really good starting as early as 9:30. At the time, I kept thinking, all they need now is people…. and a great lighting designer. By 10pm, strobes and lasers were flashing around. By 11, the place was packed. And mostly by beautiful latino ladies and gents (mostly gents) who I’d never seen before. The music was a mix of techno, merengue, hip hop, cumbia, and reggueton. The drinks were expensive and there was a cover but it was well worth a good 5 hour set. kudos to the DJ. this is definitely the latest addition to the urban circuit.

The restaurant/club doesn’t seem to have a big online presence. though they’ve always  got ad space in both the gay newspapers. So check out their february lineup here.

One of the interesting things I did notice about el potrero is that there were a lot of couples, distinguished from us lowly single folk by the holding holding of hands or waists or cheeks. Apparently they want people to know that “this one belongs to me.” People in couples didn’t seem to dance a lot outside of the couples. It was especially interesting considering at both JR’s and Tracks (where clientele seems to be overwhelmingly white. I’m just sayin…) couples aren’t so prevalent. And if they are, people aren’t being very open about it. hmmm…

ps… reading the gayzette online is like a dream. thank you technology for giving us the give of smut without killing trees

cycles of the circuit

Last night I got the chance to go to Kings & Queens for the second time. Yes, there is a wednesday night party for the gays and yes… it is good. First of all, the space is amazing. Apparently it’s the old Real World Denver house turned night-time hotspot. Second, I’ve heard two dj’s spin there already and they were both  good. That’s pretty much all you need to be added to the urban circuit. So. New party on wednesdays.

The thing is, we’ve got to go to it. both times I went, there were less than 50 people. There are more of us out there than that, especially people looking for a dance floor. I’ve seen you. At the bar. Moving your hips to the beat of womanizer. Don’t act like you don’t want to dance.

Anyway, we’ve got to go to this party before it goes the way of sugar or wilde.

Speaking of the urban circuit. I heard from someone who heard from someone who heard from someone that eye candy at milk is no more. i hope that’s not the case and i will be investigating this weekend. if it’s true, though… another one bites the dust.

dance the pain away

Right before the holidays, a friend of mine told me that Sinful Saturday at PURE was the place to go if I wanted to get away from S&M bars*, where most of my friends spend all their time. So after a long day of fundraisers, surprise cocktail parties, cab driver scares, and generally flirting with a new prospect I finally made it this past saturday. I was already tired but I know myself to get a second wind when the music and the company are good.

Not surprisingly at all, the dj was great and I ran into quite a few of my friends. My favorite moment of the night was when sinlge ladies came on and like 20 guys walked onto the floor and did the whole dance. Now, I like beyonce… but it’s gonna take me at least another month before I know the dance as well as they did.

I’m adding this party to a list in my head that I will, from now on, refer to as the Urban Circuit. My friend almost fell over then she found out I’d never been to half the parties. So in the spirit of sharing, I’m gonna spill the t on the circuit. More to come as I attend the parties.

Thursday night is Liquid at Club M. I still haven’t been but I hear the dj is great. and that’s all that matters, right?

Friday is Eye Candy at milk. I’ve been more than once. Let’s just say I’m glad there aren’t any pictures

Saturday is, of course, Sinful at PURE. You already know all about that

Finally, Sunday is climax underground at vinyl. I went to the summer party. Who knew it was still going on

*Stand and Model bars – where the drinks are cheap and the dj is really just a guy on his ipod, resulting in long periods of standing around and checking out other guys while they stand around aka most places in Denver, but we like it, don’t we.
