el potrero

I went to El Potrero for the first time this past saturday and, first of all, it was a great party. The music was really good starting as early as 9:30. At the time, I kept thinking, all they need now is people…. and a great lighting designer. By 10pm, strobes and lasers were flashing around. By 11, the place was packed. And mostly by beautiful latino ladies and gents (mostly gents) who I’d never seen before. The music was a mix of techno, merengue, hip hop, cumbia, and reggueton. The drinks were expensive and there was a cover but it was well worth a good 5 hour set. kudos to the DJ. this is definitely the latest addition to the urban circuit.
The restaurant/club doesn’t seem to have a big online presence. though they’ve always got ad space in both the gay newspapers. So check out their february lineup here.

One of the interesting things I did notice about el potrero is that there were a lot of couples, distinguished from us lowly single folk by the holding holding of hands or waists or cheeks. Apparently they want people to know that “this one belongs to me.” People in couples didn’t seem to dance a lot outside of the couples. It was especially interesting considering at both JR’s and Tracks (where clientele seems to be overwhelmingly white. I’m just sayin…) couples aren’t so prevalent. And if they are, people aren’t being very open about it. hmmm…
ps… reading the gayzette online is like a dream. thank you technology for giving us the give of smut without killing trees
