Essay on gay masculinity… or how HIV/AIDS spelled the end of the Tom of Finland aesthetic
Probably my least favorite aspect of contemporary gay culture is the ridiculous emphasis placed on a falsely “natural” Abercrombie-esque masculinity. Gay writer/blogger Trever Hoppe emailed me alerting me to an essay he had written which proposes this new model of masculinity was a product and reaction to the beginning of the HIV/AIDS crisis. Hoppe also argues the aesthetic of “natural masculinity” is just as much of a contrived performance as Tom of Finland cartoons (pictured above).
Quite a claim, I know.
Since the essay covers alot of ground in a short time I’m not going to pick just one paragraph to quote. Read the essay here if you’re interested in seeing how Hoppe backs up his claim, it’s not very long.
