Real World DC – Ep 5 & 6 Recapped: “Mike And Callie Get Gay”
Part of a humorous weekly recap of MTV’s Real World DC featuring cast member and Denver queer Mike Manning. These recaps are not meant to substitute for watching the actual show but rather provide humorous commentary about that week’s drama. Full episodes are available on MTV’s website here.
First a brief recap of Episode 5. Episode 5 was chock full of boring Emily and Ty what-kind-of-relationship-should-we-have drama so I’m boycotting it.
By far the most bizarre thing to happen in episode 5 is Josh (remember him, he finally does something this episode) gets a phone call from his MOM that his girlfriend was spotted making out with some random dude in a bar. How Josh’s mom gets this information is beyond me. Josh then calls his GF and confronts her, she flips out and he hangs up on her and then does the only logical thing and goes and gets his nose pierced. Oh and MTV shows the piercing taking place in all it’s graphic HD detail, thank you very much MTV.
Later in the episode Josh’s slutty girlfriend Ashley comes to visit and they canoodle around town like nothing ever happened and generally make me sick. One moment of levity is when Mike calls Ashley “pocket size” which is the pot calling the kettle black since it’s not like he’s the tallest roommate or anything.
::cough:: pocket gay ::cough::
In other hilarity that episode Callie takes to drunk dialing her jerk ex-BF Cash. I near well lost my shit laughing when her roommate Emily confronts her with, “that’s a douchebag, hang up the phone.”
After Josh sends his pocket girlfriend home he goes out the following night and picks up some girl Kelly-Ann and might or might not make out with her back in the house’s music studio. Apparently the girl roommates post photos of this to Facebook because the next day Josh’s pocket-girlfriend calls him, says she saw the photos, leading Josh to break up with her.
Allow me to take this opportunity to remind you that Facebook recently updated their privacy settings, maybe you should have a look at your privacy settings.
Ok now on to Episode 6. Things lead off with the announcement that Mike landed his internship at HRC. We get to see his office cube and learn he’s working on HRC’s Voices of Honor campaign which deals with Don’t Ask Don’t Tell and how he’s met so many awesome gay people working there. This is followed by confessional footage of Mike spouting off the sort of dickish things you typically hear from guys still coming-out about wanting to meet people who aren’t defined by their sexuality bla bla bla. Apparently Mike has found HRC is full of quality career gay activists who don’t focus on their gay identity.
Yes I realize this makes no sense. No the episode doesn’t explain it any further.
In other gay news Callie gets an interview and then internship at the Washington Blade, an LGBT newspaper in DC. This despite the fact it appears Callie doesn’t know what LGBT stands for, but she’s got enthusiasm and a desire to grow as a photographer. Her trial assignment is party photos at a bar called Halo given to her by the Blade’s editor Kevin Naff. In case you’re curious what happened to Kevin after the Blade folded, Kevin is now at a publication called the DC Agenda.
Mike accompanies Callie on her shoot at the gay bar and proves to be quite popular. He meets an older guy and BAM next thing you know:
You go girl.
The other big plot line this episode is Andrew and Ashley’s uber creepy pizza fight. The fight itself isn’t all that creepy but MTV chose some super creepy and totally inappropriate background non-music to set it to. And as always the remainder of the episode is spent processing fallout from the fight with Ashley spending a night in a hotel and Andrew being emotionally 5-years-old and avoiding addressing the problem. The whole thing is just creepy, disturbing , and badly handled and I’ll spare you further details of having to re-live it.
10 second preview of next week: The roommates go clubbing, drama ensues. Discuss.
